Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit on Covered Bridges

On March 12, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) opened a new exhibition titled, "Covered Bridges: Spanning the American Landscape," at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, Pa. The exhibition was developed by the Historic American Engineering Record, a division of the National Park Service, and SITES; it is funded in part by the Federal Highway Administration. (OHBA has provided materials for this exhibit.)

Following its run in Harrisburg, "Covered Bridges" will travel to the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vt., and will continue on a multi-city national tour through 2009. For an up-to-date schedule, visit their website at Covered Bridge Itinerary

Hartman CB Gets a Paint Job

Student volunteers on spring break from the University of Minnesota have painted the interior of the Hartman CB in Fairfield County according to a story in the Columbus Dispatch (March 13, 2006). This photo taken in 2004 shows some of the graffiti on the bridge, which is located in Lockville Park.

Preservation Takes Off in Iowa

The historic Hale 3-span bowstring iron bridge (1879) has been airlifted (in sections) by a pair of Iowa National Guard helicopters to a new home as a pedestrian bridge in Wapsie State Park, Iowa. This should be an inspiration to other states! Click for story
