The Whetstone Iron Bowstring bridge in Mt. Gilead (1879) was damaged by a vehicle during the week of 8/29/05 and the bridge has been closed.
As reported at the September Village Council Meeting the County Engineer has no plans for the necessary repairs or replacement of this historic S. Delaware St. bridge. The Mayor has requested a meeting with the County official and the Administrator to discuss possible options which will be a benefit to the County as well as the Village.
As David Plowden notes in his landmark book "Bridges: the Spans of North America" iron truss bridges are the most rare of all American historic bridges. This bridge needs to be saved!
